The drawing depicts a classic motif in the theme illustrated by the painter, an image of the Roman countryside near the Tiber. With fine illustration technique, the artist captures the image of a moment of summer rural life.
Karl, the adopted son of a genre painter, after learning the basics of drawing from his father in Karlsruhe, he moved to Monaco of Bavaria to complete his art studies at the painter Carl Rottmann and finally made ​​his way to Paris.
He spent a long time in Italy and Rome, where he opened a studio in Via del Babuino 38 from 1858 to 1873, dealing both with views of Rome, as evidenced by the numerous paintings, and views of the surrounding countryside and unhealthy Pontine Marshes. He was also a professor at the Accademia di San Luca.
