The drawing depicts the martyrdom of three Jesuit missionaries in Japan crucified in Nagasaki in 1597 on the "holy hill" and proclaimed saints by Pope Pius IX in 1862.
The work is certainlythe preparatory drawing in its final version for the painting of the same name.
